Chapter 11.5, Problem 11.142P
At a given instant in an airplane race, airplane A is flying horizontally in a straight line and its speed is being increased at the rate of 8 m/s2. Airplane B is flying at the same altitude as airplane A and, as it rounds a pylon, is following a circular path of 300-m radius. Knowing that at the given instant the speed of B is being decreased at the rate of 3 m/s2, determine for the positions shown, (a) the velocity of B relative to A, (b) the acceleration of B relative to A.

A boat is moving to the right with a constant deceleration of 0.3 m/s2 when a boy standing on the deck D throws a ball with an initial velocity relative to the deck which is vertical. The ball rises to a maximum height of 8 m above the release point and the boy must step forward a distance d to catch it at the same height as the release point. Determine (a) the distance d, (b) the relative velocity of the ball with respect to the deck when the ball is caught.
4) Will was leisurely flying his F-18 when he encountered an alien aircraft. The alien was flying at an
altitude of 3 km while Will was at an altitude of 600 m. Will begins to increase his speed at a rate of
2.0 m/s each second. Will is traveling at a speed of 750 km/h at the instant when = 45° and at the
same instant at this same instant if the alien has a constant velocity of 1,500 km/h. Calculate the
following:
a) Determine the velocity and acceleration vectors (in m/s and m/s2, respectively) of the alien as
observed by Will. [Ans. to Check: VB/A = 208.3 i m/s]
b) Determine the time rate of change of the vector r that is between Will and the alien ship in m/s.
In other words, find r. [Ans. to Check: r = 147.32 m/s]
c)
Calculate the angular velocity of the space ship relative to Will in rad/s.
d) Determine the radial and angular accelerations in m/s² and rad/s². [Ans. to Check: * = 4.86 m/s²]
