The sun doesn’t shine as brightly in winter as it does in summer. This means that in winter you won’t generate enough to fulfil your energy needs whilst you have a surplus of energy in summer. It is therefore necessary to place a battery in your house to store the extra energy. If we assume that we generate 66% of our total energy in the months April to September and that we use equal amounts of energy throughout the year. How much electricity must we store over these 6 months to use in the other half of the year? Give your answer in 3 significant figures. Remember we use 2990kWh of electricity per year.
How many hours of sunlight does it take to capture the same amount of energy stored in 1 L of petrol, if instead of using a tree we use a solar panel?Assume:
a tree takes up around 30 m2 of land area;
we have a solar panel with the same area as that taken up by the tree;
1 L of petrol contains 34.2 MJ of energy;
a solar panel captures energy at an average rate of 50 W/m2 for 12 hours a day.
How many hours does it take to capture the required amount of energy? Give your answer to one significant figure.

- Before brewers had access to propane or natural gas, they would heat large, insulated vats of water by adding hot stones to the water. The stones are heated to 800°C before they are dropped into a particular well-insulated large vat holding 1,200 kg of water at 20°C. If we want to heat the water to 70°C, what mass of stones must be added the the vat? The specific heat of the stone is about 790 J/kg°C and the specific heat of water is 4,186 J/kg°C. The surface radiates energy upward; the much cooler sky above radiates much less.
