K
According to Poiseuille's laws, the velocity V of blood is given by V=k(R²-2) where R is the
radius of the blood vessel, r is the distance of a layer of blood flow from the center of the vessel, and
k is a constant.
A patient takes blood vessel dilation medication so that her blood velocity is modeled by Poiseuille's
law with k = 479.2. Find the rate of change of the blood velocity when R = 0.08 mm and R is
changing at 0.008 mm per minute. Assume r is constant.
...
The blood velocity is increasing at mm per minute each minute.
(Round to the nearest thousandth as needed.)

Water rushes out of a pipe which is 11m vertically below the top of a
reservoir. What is the maximum speed of the water leaving the pipe? (g
= 9.81 ms-2)
iii.
On the Earth water gushes from a pipe at 12 ms-!. At what speed would
the water travel on the Moon, the height being the same? (g on the Moon
is 1.6 ms-2)?
You are working in a cardiac unit an are tasked to determine the percentage of blockage in a patients carotid artery. For this patient, you know the average blood velocity for a non blocked artery is 30 cm/s. Using the Dopper Ultrasound, you measure the blood velocity in your patient to be 50 cm/s at the fastest position along the carotid artery. About what percent of the patient's artery is blocked? Note: In this procedure, the patient is lying flat, meaning there is no change in height of the artery. Also, do not include the percent sign in your actual answer. If you do, your answer will be counted wrong.
Hint: Suppose A2/A1 = 1/5 (for example) where A2 is the cross sectional area of the blockage and A1 is the area outside the blockage. This would mean that the blockage leaves only 20% (0.2) of the artery open. Or, that the artery itself is 100%-20% = 80% blocked.
