Textbook Question
Chapter 4, Problem 129DQ
(Here's a Chapter 4-type question): The first stage of each Space X rocket that services the ISS no longer is dumped into the sea, but is returned for recycling (when all goes well). As the empty first stage falls back to Earth, one of its main engines slows its descent velocity to zero at the moment of touchdown. Is it correct to say that during this maneuver, the velocity and the acceleration of the first stage are in opposite directions? Defend your answer.

A probe of mass 100 kg is coasting through a dense gas cloud in deep space, where g = 0. There is drag from the gas cloud and it is modeled by the equation -0.6 v (N). If the probe entered the gas cloud with speed 1,555 m/s, how much time, in s, will it take for the probe's speed to be reduced to 15 percent of its initial velocity?
(Please answer to the fourth decimal place - i.e 14.3225)
Answer the question in full details, thank you very much, Answer on the correct significant figures:
Suppose you are a space traveler, and you land on the surface of a strange new planet. As stated in yourStarfleet Manual, your first job is to measure the acceleration due to gravity, g, on this planet. You construct an"Atwood machine”, which consists of two masses connected to a pulley by a string of negligible mass, asshown in the figure. One of the masses is m1 = 54.1 kg and the other is m2 = 44.0 kg. The pulley is auniform disk of mass M = 108.0 kg and radius r = 67.0 cm; it is mounted on frictionless bearings. Whenreleased from rest, the heavier mass moves down 21.1 cm in 0.57 s, and there is no slippage of the string onthe pulley.
What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the blocks, in m/s^2
What is the acceleration due to gravity gg on this planet? Give the answer in m/s^2
CALCULATE the acceleration of the Falcon 9 Rocket if it takes 70
seconds from launch to reach supersonic speed = 343 m/s. b) Calculate
the theoretical acceleration of a 549,054 kg Falcon-9 Rocket, during
launch when the thrust of its engines has a net force of 7.6 x 10^6 N. (Hint:
use Newton's 2nd law and solve for acceleration) c) Neglecting wind
resistance, DETERMINE the theoretical time in seconds it would take for
the rocket to reach supersonic speed? (Hint, use your kinematic equation
(final) = (initial) + a*t, solve for t). d) Briefly discuss reasons for the
difference between your theoretical and actual accelerations and times
to reach supersonic speed.

- Why are nuclear fuels important in space craft?arrow_forwardwhy do we launch at a higher altitude to reduce the kinetic energy required to reach orbit?arrow_forwardYou are tasked with designing the propulsion system for Eagle Rocketry. You must first figure out how big the solid rocket propellant should be. You will use ammonium perchlorate propellant burning at 10 cm /sec to have an acceleration of 65 m/s². If the competition requires your rocket to reach 29,807 ft, what is the minimum volume of propellant you will need in cm? Remember the rocket, for some time, travels up after the rocket engines turns off before it slows all the way down and reaches its peak height (AKA apogee). If you know how long the rockets are on for you can multiply this by the rate at which you burn fuel to get your final answer. This is a tough problem, but graphing the velocity versus time and knowing what the area under that curve represents, can save you a lot of time and algebra.arrow_forward
