Chapter 45, Problem 4ITD
Summary Introduction

To review:

The conclusion that the women infected with HPV16 and HPV18 have a high risk of cervical cancer. The given graph provides information about the correlation between the cumulative incidence rate of cervical cancer and the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) status.

Biology: The Dynamic Science (MindTap Course List), Chapter 45, Problem 4ITD

Introduction:

Cervical cancer occurs in the cervix, a narrow opening into the uterus of the human female. The cancer cells divide intensely, form a solid tumor, and affect the other cells as well. Cervical cancer is very common in women. HPV is most commonly transmitted through infection and it also causes genital warts.

Laura Brennan, a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine advocate and cervical cancer casualty, was diagnosed with HPV-16-associated cervical cancer at age 24. In 2018, U.S. health officials extended the allowable age for the HPV vaccine to 45. Determine which patients will have the greatest chance of protection from the Gardasil vaccine, which prevents infections of nine strains of HPV including HPV-16 and HPV-18 and five additional types of cancer-causing HPV as well as strains HPV-6 and HPV-11 that cause genital warts. Recall that vaccines train the body's immune system to recognize a particular infection (see figure). Disease Vaccine Vaccine Antibodies organisms Antibodies A vaccine with an inactive form or harm- less amount of a virus The vaccine stimulates When the individual is the immune system to produce antibodies (in green) that recognize exposed to the virus after vaccination, the new antibodies are primed to attack the invader. (or other organism) is injected under the skin.…
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is considered an epidemic and can lead to lethal cancers. It is assessed that the risk of sexually active women to be infected sometime in their lifetime is nearly 80%. Prevalence of cervical cancer and high mortality rates, especially in developing countries, are alarming and require immediate attention. What co-factors have been identified to have roles in the progression of human papilloma virus infection to cervical cancer? HPV viruses have a distinct capability to evade confrontation with the human immune system? Give three basic virus properties responsible for this capability. What is the role of vaccination in the management of HPV infections?
Oncogenic viruses may either carry oncogenes within their genome, or affect native genes within the cells they infect, thus having an effect on cell cycle regulation within host cells. 1) True 2) False
