Chapter 55, Problem 1ITD
Summary Introduction

To review:

The accelerating extinctions in the three geographic categories and in the group of organisms. The focus required by the conservation biologists on their efforts to preserve species.

Introduction:

The cessation of existence of an organism or a group of organisms is known as extinction. There are major threats that are responsible for the cause of threatened and endangered species in the biodiversity. The release of pollutants, acid precipitation, the introduction of invasive species in the new habitat, and the spread of disease due to disease-causing organisms can lead to devastating outcomes.

In 2011, approximately 23% (1138) of mammal species and 12% (1253) of bird species were globally threatened. These two groups have been thoroughly studied. The case with other groups of organisms is not well known. A large number of the threatened species are concentrated in tropical rain forest habitats, where biodiversity is high. Which of the following data options could be used to determine the cause of biodiversity decline in tropical habitats?
Which of the following is not a part of the red list criteria for "critically endangered" species?     The population is expected to decline by 25% or more within 3 years or 1 generation.   The species has a restricted range <100km2 at a single location and there is observed or predictive habitat loss, fragmentation, ecological imbalance or heavy commercial pollution.   Extinction probably is greater than 50% within 10 years or 3 generations.   The total population size is less than 200 mature individuals.
You are a population ecologist studying animals in a national park, and park managers are asking for advice on how to focus their limited conservation funds. How would you rate the following three species, from most vulnerable (and thus most in need of conservation attention) to least vulnerable? Give reasons for your choices. • A bird that is a generalist in its use of habitats and resources • A salamander endemic to the park that lives in highelevation forest • A fish that specializes on a few types of invertebrate prey and has a large population size
