DATA For the Texas Department of Public Safety, you are investigating an accident that occurred early on a foggy morning in a remote section of the Texas Panhandle. A 2012 Prius traveling due north collided in a highway intersection with a 2013 Dodge Durango that was traveling due east. After the collision, the wreckage of the two vehicles was locked together and skidded across the level ground until it struck a tree. You measure that the tree is 35 ft from the point of impact. The line from the point of impact to the tree is in a direction 39° north of east. From experience, you estimate that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the ground and the wreckage is 0.45. Shortly before the collision, a highway patrolman with a radar gun measured the speed of the Prius to be 50 mph and, according to a witness, the Prius driver made no attempt to slow down. Four people with a total weight of 460 lb were in the Durango. The only person in the Prius was the 150-lb driver. The Durango with its passengers had a weight of 6500 lb, and the Prius with its driver had a weight of 3042 lb. (a) What was the Durango’s speed just before the collision? (b) How fast was the wreckage traveling just before it struck the tree?

- You are working as an expert witness for the defense of a container ship captain whose ship ran into a reef surrounding an island. The captain is being charged with intentionally running the ship into the reef. In discovery, the following information is correct: The ship was traveling at 2.5 m/s toward the reef when a mechanical failure caused the rudder to jam in the straight-ahead position. At that point in time, the ship was 900 m from the reef. The wind was blowing directly toward the reef and exerting a constant force of 9.00 x 103 N on the boat in a direction toward the reef. The mass of the ship and its cargo was 5.50 x 107kg. During the preparation for the trial, the captain claims that without control of the direction of travel, the only choice he had was to put the engines in reverse at maximum power, such that the total force exerted by the frictional drag force of the water on the propeller was 1.25 x 105 N in a direction away from the reef. From this information, construct…arrow_forwardA child with mass of 16.5 kg stands on the edge of a park bench and leaps into the air. Her initial speed is 2.4 m/s directed at an angle of 30 degrees above the horizontal. Your job is to determine the relative speed of the collision, to help establish new crash standards. The faster train's "black box" shows that it began negatively accelerating at 2.1 m/s2m/s2 when it was 52 mm from the slower train, while the slower train continued at constant speed. - A 5.0-kilogram grenade lying motionless on the ground explodes into three pieces. (It's not a very sophisticated grenade.) A 2.0-kilogram piece flies off at 18 meters per second and 110 degrees. A 1.7-kilogram piece flies off at 31 meters per second and 270 degrees. What is the velocity of the third piece? Include units in your answers.arrow_forwardA person driving on I-82 glanced at his phone to read a very important text message. When he looked back up at the road, he saw that the traffic ahead had come to a standstill and he immediately slammed on his brakes. His car created 96.5 m long skid marks before rear-ending another car. Unfortunately, a passenger in the rear-ended car was seriously injured, thus requiring an investigation by the State Patrol. The State Patrol has no proof of distracted driving, however they want to determine if a citation for speeding should be issued. A State Patrol investigator used a 3.9 kg drag sled to determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between the road and the tires of the car. The drag sled’s spring scale read 28 N when it was pulled along the ground at a constant speed. Use Newton’s Second Law and kinematics to estimate the minimum value of the car’s speed when the driver locked the brakes. (answer: about 83 mi/hr) Note: You do not need the mass of the car to answer this…arrow_forwardA person driving on I-82 glanced at his phone to read a very important text message. - When visiting a friend in Atlanta you decide to drive around the city. You turn a corner and are driving up a steep hill. Suddenly, a small boy runs out on the street chasing a ball. You slam on the brakes and skid to a stop leaving a 50-foot-long skid mark on the street. The boy calmly walks away but a policemen watching from the sidewalk walks over and gives you a speeding ticket. He points out that the speed limit on this street is 25mph. After you recover your wits, you begin to examine the situation. You determine that the street makes an angle of 25◦ with the horizontal and that the coefficient of static friction between your tires and the street is 0.80. You also find that the coefficient of kinetic friction between your tires and the street is 0.60. Your car’s information book tells you that the mass of your car is 1600 kg. You weigh 140 lbs. Will you fight the ticket in court? Please draw a figure with your detailed answer.arrow_forwardWhen visiting a friend in Atlanta you decide to drive around the city. - A big boulder has a mass of 8.20t (metric tons) and rests at a coal mine site. The boulder is blown up with explosives into 3 parts, all the 3 parts move horizontally in the xy plane. The biggest part (mass 3.3 t) travels west at a speed of 3m/s. The second part (mass 2.7t) moves at 2m/s in a direction 25.0 degrees south of east. What is the speed and direction of the third boulder part?arrow_forwardYou are working part-time for the GT Sports Media Complex, editing video for the women’s softball team. In one particular clip, a GT player hits a home run over the center field fence. The ball leaves the bat at a height of 4 ft, and crosses the outfield fence (220 ft away) at a height of 10 ft. Logs of the game indicate that the pitch was clocked at 68 mph as it reached the plate. Your frame-by-frame analysis of the 30-frame-per-second video indicate that the ball spent only a single frame in contact with tha bat, and another 126 frames travelling to the outfield fence.
