Artificial Intelligence Introduction Artificial intelligence is the study and development of enabling computer and machine technology to learn, simulate intelligence, use logic, and perform tasks that are typically performed by humans. Artificial intelligence is an area of research that has been prone to controversy. Researchers are conflicted in regards to whether artificial intelligence is beneficial. Some believe that it will help solve many societal issues, others fear that it will cause further problems. Although technological advances bring many benefits, some members of society question what the major impacts will be long-term. Along with the unveiling of the mechanical man, Westinghouse Electric also introduced his companion Sparko, a mechanical dog.3 The emergence of multiple new inventions in the 20th century gave way to many new terminologies. In 1943, Arturo Rosenblueth, Norbert Wiener, and Julian Bigelow coined the term “cybernetics,” and by 1948 Norbert Wiener published a popular book with the same name. By 1950, the inquiries about AI brought about the publishing of “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” by A.M. Turing. In Turing’s seminal paper, Turing raises the question of the AI’s ability to think and make decisions as an intelligent human would. This paper would lead to a standard testing called the “Turing Test,” which would be used by many researchers of artificial intelligence. Less than a decade later, the term “artificial intelligence” would be coined in 1956 by John McCarthy at the Dartmouth Conference, which was exclusively devoted to AI discoveries.4 During the time between the early 1970s and late 1980s there were many inventions that contradicted and confirmed beliefs about artificial intelligence. These inventions ranged from a more advanced chess-playing computer used to train chess players, to natural language programs. One noted milestone in AI history is the accomplishment of ALVINN (an Autonomous Land Vehicle in a Neural Network), which drove 2800 miles in 1989. After the success of ALVINN, the advances in AI
Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is “the intelligence exhibited by machines or software.” AI is found in many forms in our society, from video games to traffic predictions to the autocorrect in our phones. When machine personalities are no longer distinguishable from human ones, however, there will be implications for humanity. This advancement will at first be met with skepticism, and the first people to interact with these AI will not consider them sentient beings. Artificial intelligence will eventually be complex enough to exhibit human-like personality, and it is at this point that we will embrace machines, and redefine selfhood to include artificial beings. Once we consider AI sentient, they will rapidly advance until they are
Artificial Intelligence is the taking over of machines to do tasks that would normally require a human to do. The idea of artificial intelligence has been around for years, appearing in movies and television shows to show what the future might bring. Artificial intelligence is becoming closer to a reality and now society must question if it should have a role in society. Artificial intelligence has many flaws at the moment making it impractical for use until society can address the issues facing it like the loss of jobs and how to control the use of AI.
When someone brings up the term “artificial intelligence”, a variety of connotations tend to arise, connotations that often are unfair or unrepresentative of the true real-world applications of such a term. Due to the incidentally fear-mongering nature of the media, artificial intelligence can refer to something as basic as a robotic arm in a factory, as well as the implied extinction and/or enslavement of the human race as caused by robo-revolution. As of today, however, when applied in the world of modern technology, artificial intelligence is defined as any innovation that performs a task usually completed by humans. Of course, with this definition, artificial intelligence holds the potential for both societal harm and benefit, and its fate
Artificial intelligence or AI is in simple terms, the ability for a computer to learn on its own, without any input from the user, and it has the ability to think on its own and make its own decisions and is also able to understand human intelligence. This is done by using tools in many fields. These fields include, but are not limited to computer science, natural language and speech, machine learning and patter recognition, and computer vision (Luke Muehlhauser, 2014). This also includes psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, economics, probability, and optimization and logic. These are only the beginnings of what is required to meet what is needed to even to begin to scratch the topic of
One of the hottest topics that modern science has been focusing on for a long time is the field of artificial intelligence, the study of intelligence in machines or, according to Minsky, “the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men”.(qtd in Copeland 1). Artificial Intelligence has a lot of applications and is used in many areas. “We often don’t notice it but AI is all around us. It is present in computer games, in the cruise control in our cars and the servers that route our email.” (BBC 1). Different goals have been set for the science of Artificial Intelligence, but according to Whitby the most mentioned idea about the goal of AI is provided by the Turing Test. This test is also called the
What is Artificial Intelligence or AI? Why people are so concerned about its impact on the human job market and what is the hype about AI? To describe AI in basic terms, it is a branch of Computer Science which is concerned with the study and creation of computer systems. AI refers to “machines that respond to simulation consistent with traditional responses from humans, given the human capacity for contemplation, judgment and intention. It
Artificial intelligence pertains to the ability of digital computers or computer-controlled robots to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings, such as humans. Since the mid-20th century, scientists have attempted to develop a system capable of carrying out tasks perceived as requiring human intelligence which includes natural language understanding, fault diagnosis, and supplying expert advice ("Artificial Intelligence(ai)," 2011, n.p.). Although many people, particularly workers within the , are concerned about the effects of artificial intelligence, the capabilities of these machines can benefit society in a multitude of ways ("Artificial Intelligence(ai)," 2011, n.p.). According to Obama, in a speech in Pittsburgh during the 2011 the Robotics Initiative, “Revolutions in technology have transformed the way we live and the way we work,” (Executive Office, 2016). This is in fact true since AI has already begun to have reaping major benefits to the public in fields as diverse as health care, criminal justice, and also the education of individuals which will ultimately revolutionize society (Executive Office, 2016).
Society today is greatly influenced by technology and the impact it has had within the past 20 years. One of the largest breakthroughs, though, is Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). The technology associated with A.I. has greatly developed in the past years, and is only making devices smarter. When someone mentions technology, or even the technological breakthroughs the world has gone through recently, many people go straight to smartphones and computers. A.I. is often overlooked, or put into a general category of "technology". Yet, artificial intelligence is something that should we not be so quick to dismiss, and should be something that gets people talking and even excited for what the future holds.
Artificial intelligence is the development of a computer system that is able to perform tasks of human intelligence like visual perception, speech recognition, and decision-making. Computer scientists have made a substantial advancement in the
The first step in getting anywhere with this debate must begin with defining what artificial intelligence is exactly. Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage in the human behaviors of intelligence.
Two words that we all think we know fairly well are the words ‘artificial’ and ‘intelligence’. When asked, people will suggest that ‘artificial’ can be defined as fake, phony, not real, or made-up. When asked what ‘intelligence’ means, people will suggest the word being defined as smart, having knowledge, or being capable of certain or many tasks. Though when these words are brought together, it becomes unclear as to what these words mean, and what it means for something to be “artificially intelligent.”
The human mind is the most complex part of the body of a human being. Intelligence is defined as the mental ability to reason, solve problems and learn. The cognitive ability of the brain changes through variations in the environment. The human brain has evolved over time hence an opportunity to improve the intelligence of the human species. The evolution of language is the most qualitative change of the conscious brain that differentiates us from other creatures. John McCarthy defines artificial intelligence as the science of engineering intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence was discovered in a bid to increase computational power with emphasis on problem solving to resemble a human brain. There has been major research on whether artificial intelligence can surpass the human intelligence. Some researchers claim that it cannot whereas others are of the thought that artificial intelligence can exceed the human brain activities. Though this debate brings about many ethical questions, it is important for the human race to explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence becoming mightier than the human intelligence.
Alan Turing cracked the enigma code on July 9th, 1941 and laid the infrastructure for artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence has come a long way since the first robot was perfected. In 1950, Alan Turing published, Computer Machinery and Intelligence. This book introduced the birth of artificial intelligence as we know it today. Millions of robots with advanced technology and uses are being created every day since the emergence of this first robot occurred in 1969. While the world advances, so is technology. Technology is progressing and becoming better and more reliable, each day. Artificial intelligence is a certain type of technology that is resourceful nationwide. People use it in the medical field, it’s also been helpful to military forces, this technology is truly helping our world to become a better place.
Artificial Intelligence is a topic within the public media that has existed for decades, but is now a concern due to the reality of human advancement and innovation in the field of science and technology. Many people believe that computers will become self-aware or sentient and view humanity as a disposable resource and gain supremacy. Reasoning that research on the technology should halt and not become more advance. Whereas others believe they will help catapult research and the economy forward, supporting the operations and innovations the technology offers. The complicated and divided solutions to the debate aren’t obvious, but there are more benefits to improving artificial intelligence than there is stopping it. Therefore, the negative effects people believe will occur can be resolved.
Artificial intelligence is a concept in computer science in which scientist develop programs to possess intelligent human characteristic such as the ability of human cognition. Artificial Intelligence (A.I) has developed over many years and has incorporated into our daily lifestyle; these include voice recognition/ assistance such as Siri and Cortana. Another example is our interactive devices to flying drones to Amazon Prime for delivery. They use Wi-Fi-sensors to control the activity of drone to perform certain actions such as delivering packages and much more.
