How To Treat Future Concussions?

The treatment for a concussion used to be as simple as taking time to rest, or smelling bath salts before returning to play. In today’s world, concussions are more appropriately recognized as a serious head injury. In order to correctly diagnose and treat concussions, professional action needs to occur. Preventative measures, proper assessments and diagnosis, correct treatments, and increasing awareness are a few ways to reduce an issue down to a more manageable position. Concussions are a common threat in many aspects of life today. From contact sports to accidental falls, head injuries are an increasing issue that needs to be recognized as such. Two to four million concussion injuries occur from sports and recreation settings in the United States every year (The American Academy of Neurology). Most of these injuries result in a full recovery, but there are people who are left with dehabilitating injuries for the remainder of their lives. Thankfully it is becoming well known that these problems exist, and many people are starting to take action.

On November 6th, 1869 the young American sport called football was born. In 1903, the addition of the football helmet was introduced; however, the helmet was not mandatory for all players until 1943 (“History of the”). Since the mandatory protocol for the use of helmets, the football helmet has advanced in safety. The helmet evolved from a plastic shell-shaped helmet to a more protective rounded plastic helmet with a face mask and chin strap. After those improvements, the modifications for safety increased. Today, professional football players have impact indicators on their chin straps to identify head injuries. As players have gotten bigger and stronger, head injury awareness is a major part of player’s safety and if they are not aware, it often results in a concussion. Many players and viewers of the game do not know how concussions occur, what the effects are, and how engineers and associations try to prevent the occurrence.

If an athlete was to be impacted on the head on the playing field and was to gain a concussion they should sit out until they are able to fully recover. During the time period after one concussion athletes are more vulnerable to gain another. If a player were to get another concussion during this time period, permanent brain damage may be evident in the future. Also, If the player doesn't let their concussion heal properly it may lead to permanent brain damage in the future.

In recent years concussions have become more and more of a topic due to their effects on the people who receives them. Concussions can cause a multitude of problems for a person later in their life whether they suffered from a major concussion or just a minor concussion. These problems can occur if a person ended up with multiple concussions over a lifetime or if they only have had one single concussion The problems a person can encounter are all somewhat connected but very diverse at the same time. Most of the problems a person will encounter will be due to a change in that person's brain but they can range from simple memory problems to suicidal problems.

The sound of two helmets bashing together sends a piercing crack through the stadium, soon to be followed by a roar of thunderous applause from every fan in the stadium. The next day the paper reads that one of the players in the collision suffered a concussion, nut the only thing people care about is watching the highlight on SportsCenter. Yet, people watching the games, coaching the games, and playing the games have never fully understood the danger of concussions. It is important for people in the football community to become aware of what head to head hits in football cause because they do not know the true danger of concussions and how often they occur, what concussions can lead to, and how drastically football can decrease the quality

Excellence appears to be their one goal, which is to win Super Bowl championships. Some players perform at a high level for a while, whereas others don’t have a chance at experiencing actual playing time on the field at all. NFL players are less and less likely to have a definitive long-term career in the NFL. On average their career may span for about 3 ½ years (Stradley, 2011). Concussions are currently one of the most debated, studied and controversial subjects among all levels of athletics. This dangerous brain condition has only been properly studied and monitored for a brief period of time, and until recently, the dangerous side effects of concussions were not among the public eye. Issues such as dementia, migraines and depression are among the issues that those who suffer concussions are at risk for. Looking into the culture of athletics, the mindset that is driven into young athletes from an early age all the way throughout their entire athletic career, no matter the level, to see if there is a correlation between the values that they are taught and their history of possible concussions and concussion

How the injury occurred: A concussion is a brain injury that is caused by a hit to the face, head or neck. During a hockey match, when 2 people collide (even their bodies, not necessarily their head), this can cause a sudden jarring motion of the head, which in turn can cause a concussion. Concussion can also occur when a player collides with the goal post and knock themselves unconscious. In a concussion, the brain hits the inside of the skull, damaging brain tissue. There is a protocol for this serious head injury and sometimes it can be ignored, cheated, or inadequate. "Concussion" comes from the Latin verb "concuture" which means to shake violently. A concussion is a head injury that is a result of traumatically acquired alteration in the mental status and can come with a loss of consciousness (Metzl). If someone thinks an athlete has a concussion, it is important to get them off the field so that the athlete does not make any further contact. If they got a concussion, then they are at a much greater risk for a second concussion

Approximately 10% of athletes take longer than seven days to fully recover from a concussion (article 1), but they still go back to the playing field before reaching that point. This is very dangerous and is mostly due to the fact that athletes, especially males, do not report their symptoms in fear of being sat out for a long period of time (article 1). It is understood that often if a person isn't feeling like they are experiencing any major symptoms then they might not want to be held back from participating in their normal activities. A concussion starts out as an "invisible" injury and can become majorly serious as time goes on if not properly handled and treated. An intelligent decision would be to have the concussed athlete monitored by someone, such as their coach, before a physician can give the athlete permission to return to the playing field

“Meh, what’s some brain damage gonna hurt”, was a quote that ultimately lead to the death of John McCrae athlete, Rowan Stringer. She was known to be a “leader” and an “amazing rugby player” on her school varsity rugby team according to various sources. The concept that shocks me the most is that she died from second impact syndrome, revealing her brave, yet poor decision that resulted in her unfortunate death. As you can see, concussions can be life threatening. In order to appropriately handle a concussion, one must be aware of the symptoms of a concussion, how to deal with concussions, and the consequences of concussions.

Participation in any athletic activity directly increases risk of injury.Throughout this research, many of the sources have provided information about the methods of preventing a concussion, different types of concussions or brain injuries, and medical treatments for concussions. Many athletes today receive concussions when participating in sports, mainly football and soccer. Some ways to prevent a concussion from happening would be to wear protective gear, and watching your eating habits, as this can lead to an occurrence of a concussion (Halstead). Concussions are a major public health issue and many athletes may face the risk of receiving a concussion. A concussion is a clinical syndrome of symptoms and signs occurring after biomechanical force is imparted to the brain. The different types of concussions or brain injuries include mild traumatic brain injury, postconcussion symptoms, postconcussion syndrome,which is the symptoms after receiving a concussion, chronic neurocognitive impairment, subconcussive injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Cervical Trauma Syndrome, the neck pain and stiffness after receiving the concussion, and Cerebral Palsy, which causes loss of function and mobility (Hecimovich). For people who receive concussions and have to attend school, there is a new program specifically in Guilford County Schools named “Return to Learn Method for concussions”. This program is considered to be a method to assist people who have received a concussion from playing a sport to get back on track, refresh their minds and try and remember the material they have learned. Another reason why this program would be an important method after receiving a concussion would be for the simple fact that it would help the student recover and relieve the pain in their head. Depending on how severe the athlete got hit in the head, this would determine whether the athlete has a slight headache, or a severe head injury that would require full treatment. When an athlete gets critical damage to the head, then this would possibly lead to a severe brain injury and would cause the athlete to suffer from many symptoms like headaches, fuzzy or blurry vision, dizziness, sensitivity to noise or light, balance problems,

The most common sport that athletes are being injured is in the sport of football. The reason is because it is so widely played by all ages, from Pop Warner all the way to the NFL. The NFL is doing everything they can to prevent head injuries in the sport of football.
