Importance of Early Childhood Education
Early childhood education is for children from the ages three to eight years old. In this field there are four learning goals that early programs have for a young child.
The four learning goals are: knowledge (consists of facts, concepts, ideas, and vocabulary), skills ( small units of action that occur in short period of time), disposition ( respond to certain situations), and feelings ( emotional states) ( Katz 2003). Not only does early education bring the benefit of interaction, it also lets the child feel loved and have trust in others. If a child is encountered with early programs then they are able to meet the needs of their child stage life. If these needs are not properly met, then they may become less successful in their performance in an educational environment.
Learning Opportunities
There are many types of learning opportunities that can encourage a child to learn and help to enhance their abilities. Child care centers are a great way to encourage a child to learn, and to be ready for the school atmosphere. “The Big Top Child Care Center” in Laurel, Maryland have an excellent program for children between two to nine years of age. They have an environment where teachers are well trained and are first aid and CPR certified. The early years framework emphasises a personal and individual approach to learning and development because valuing a child’s individuality, ideas and feelings is an important part of developing an individual approach to the learning and development. A child has universal physical needs such as food, drink and shelter and psychological needs such as love, affection, security, friendship which are essential to maintaining their quality of life. In recognising and trying to meet an individual child’s needs each child’s age, physical maturity, intellectual abilities, emotional development, social skills and past experiences and relationships need to be considered.
My philosophy of Early childhood education is based on research that indicates that a child’s growth is developmental. Educators can facilitate the children with different materials and environments in the classrooms that are in the early learning centres. The children need to develop their minds cognitively. “Children actively construct knowledge as they manipulate and explore their world” (Berk 2007). Children are needing to develop their abilities through their play experiences, and also through their play experiences, they can develop appropriately. Early childhood education plays a large part in a child's early development.
The purposes of early childhood education are; teaching the kids what they need to know in order to go kindergarten. Giving them a voice, and letting them be heard with what they want to say. By letting them know they have a voice, lets them feel a sense of comfort and safety. Motivating and encouraging them to do what is right. Having a yes I can attitude about wanting to do things.
Beggining ones education young, prepares one for the future. Early education has been proven to be beneficial in many aspects throughout life. Children may dread the idea of starting early but in the long run starting early can make a significant difference. Also some may even be ahead of his/her peers in the following years. Early childhood education should be a requirement due to the ability it has to help gain early skills, necessary positive behaviors, and increased brain development.
This comes early on in life and staying with them all throughout their years in school, and has consequences for them. With this happening, a goal for all teachers should reduce the gaps for early childhood educators. If children have not had the chance for a proper education early on, the programs may need to offer extensive learning experiences outside of the program. Other things such as parent engagement, health services, and mental health also help. All areas of the child's development and learning are affected such as the social factors affecting cognitive development and academic abilities.
Early childhood education has many benefits and there is the potential for many significant outcomes if universal preschools were put into place. Some feel that children who start kindergarten without previously attended preschool sometimes lack certain skills such as social and communication skills and an inability to follow routines. There were also studies done that found attending preschool could help to close the achievement gap in the grade school years. A child’s first few years of life are most important, and they absorb the most during those years. By providing universal preschool, all children would be benefiting, especially those who are in at-risk families or part of the lower class. As a society, we have a responsibility to help the children in our communities and provide them with the education they need in order to help them succeed in life.

Over the years, the development of research surrounding early childhood education has expanded, showing indicating individual and societal benefits of implementing early education programming for at-risk children. Quality early education programming can lead to long-term benefits including an increase in early language, literacy, and math development, educational attainment, economic growth as well as a decrease in crime and learning gains by children of different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds (Barnett, 2008; Gormely et al., 2005; Hustedt et al., 2007; Lynch, 2007; Robin et al., 2006). Considering the implications of early education research, Neuman’s seven essentials accurately depict the necessary programmatic principles needed to ensure the continued success of the at-risk children served in the Virginia Preschool Initiative Plus. These seven principles include: 1) Targeting, 2) Developmental Timing, 3) Intensity, 4) Professional Training, 5) Coordinated Services, 6) Compensatory Instructional Benefit, And 7) Accountability. Individually, these practices provide an outline for the development and implementation of quality early education programs that lead to sustainable benefits for children. Categorized into three stages, 1) Pre-program implementation, 2) Program Implementation, and 3) Post program implementation, this section will seek to apply the principles outlined by Neuman to VPI+.
