The Port of Long Beach was founded on June 24, 1911, a wild dream of 800 acres of mudflats at the mouth of the Los Angeles River. In the nine decades since then, those grand ambitions have been realized as the port expanded to include more than 7,600 acres of state-of-the-art cargo terminals, roadways, rail yards and shipping channels.
2.Impressive facts and current statistics
The Port of Long Beach is the second-busiest seaport in the United States and a key transportation hub in the global trade marketplace. More than $180 billion worth of cargo moves through the Port every year – everything from clothing and furniture to machinery and petroleum. East Asian trade accounts for about 90 percent of the shipments through the Port. The Port’s top trading partners are China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.

The Port’s capital improvement projects include Middle Harbor, which will be able accommodate the latest generation of container vessels with the most technologically advanced container-moving system in the country. And the replacement for the Gerald Desmond Bridge will include a higher clearance to allow larger ships to reach the Back Channel.

From grains to coal and from sugar to cocoa, dry bulk cargo cover a range of produce and raw materials that have two features in common: they are unpacked and are homogeneous. These two properties make it easier for dry bulk cargo to be dropped or poured into the hold of a bulk carrier.
Shipping containers have been used for many years and they have a fascinating history. Their main purpose of to be used is cargo and exporting mostly by ships. However it is their role as secure and cheap storage units that led shipping containers to become familiar objects seen everywhere from residential

Ports are economically and strategically important to a country as they facilitate trade and promote the local and national economy. Globally, ports handle above 90% of cargo and are an important element in global logistics and supply chains (Song & Parola, 2015). In Australia, ports enhance the country’s competitiveness, regional developments, supply chain connectivity and provide jobs (Ghaderi, Cahoon & Nguyen, 2016).
In a warehouse four activities generally occur. In the first activity the receiving dock receives the shipments that arrive at from the factory. With the
These days, ports are being integrated into worldwide logistics chain. The value of services provided by regional ports increasingly transcends the interest of local users and benefits business and communities located beyond regional and national borders. Shipping and logistic company have forced to the port to adapt their need and

To understand the container market, it is important to understand what the development of the container market has been. First of all, it is important to understand what kind of developments there have been in the container market after it’s introduction. The second question that arises is what trend the container market is following, and if a clear trend can be seen. If a trend can be seen, a conclusion could be
In this chapter, we will discuss on the background of the multipurpose port that has been chosen as an input for case study. Jurong Port is used as a subject from where the actual data were collected between the years of 2010 till 2014. The background also explains the importance of knowing the accurate berth utilization rate in order to reduce the turn-around time of vessels berthing at a multipurpose port where diversified cargo operations being carried out. The subsequent section in this chapter brings brief explanation of the port achievement, goals, facilities, and services provided at the port.
A freight forwarder is a professional logistics provider. Freight forwarders are third parties and their objective is to dispatch shipments via asset based carriers such as ships, airplanes or trucks. The ability to arrange cargo movement from one destination to another within a short period of time makes a forwarder competent and however customer’s dependency remains constant on such forwarders. Freight forwarding companies have the expertise required to arrange all the activities related to the international shipping process. Shipping various products between countries and territories usually involves a multitude of carriers, requirements and legal documentation. The freight forwarding services is specialized in handling the

Introduction Patrick is Australia’s largest and most advanced container terminal operator. The Patrick Ports portfolio comprises containers terminals, port logistics services for landside management of import/export containers, an end-to-end supply chain offerings for automotive manufacturers, bulk port management and stevedoring for general cargo (Asciano Group, 2015). Patrick operates 4 Terminals, Port Botany, Port of Melbourne, Fisherman Island, and Freemantle. Collectively the terminals handle over 3 million twenty-foot equivalents (TEU) containers per annum (Asciano Group, 2015). At present, the Fisherman Island (Brisbane) and Port Botany (Sydney) terminal of have now been successfully automated. This report will examine the opportunity to automate the company’s Melbourne terminal operation as a solution to drive world-class operating efficiency. Overview of Port Operations Patrick’s core service offering is establishing the connection between the shipping lines, freight forwarders and the beneficial freight owner. Like all ports, this service involves providing the gateway, where goods are moved between the shipping line and the terminal (Goss, 1990). Although simple in concept, this process can be considered one of the most complex tasks in the logistics industry (Wang, Cullinane, & Song, 2005). This is a result of the interactions (physical and information) between the actors involved in importing and exporting containers and operational interactions that occur in
Inbound logistics: the receiving and warehousing of raw materials, and their distribution to manufacturing as they are required.
The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box that was created to transport goods by train, truck, or ship for around the last 50 years. The pioneer of this revolutionizing box goes is a man by the name of Malcom McLean who began his transportation interest with his trucking company (McLean Trucking) that he built into one of the nation’s largest. From there, he developed the steel container in 1956, which replaced the previous loading and unloading method known as the “Break Bulk Method.” The Break Bulk Method was a much less efficient method where all goods are loaded individually using bags, boxes, drums, crates, or barrels instead of unified large containers. This method definitely being much more time consuming and risky
The research that is proposed here centers on the relationship that exists between the ports in Hong Kong and China, specifically South China, in terms of their competition with each other and their level of cooperation. Competitive strategies and degrees of cooperation have been changing drastically in the past few decades as the region and more of the world has opened up to trade, and dealing with capacity issues as well as other logistical problems has forced the very nature of competition and cooperation amongst commercial ports to change drastically (Song, 2002; Song, 2003; Cullinane et al, 2004). Witnessing the ongoing development in Hong Kong and the political and commercial/economic tensions between Hong Kong and China has been a major impetus in this research.
