Reasons Why Cell Phones Should Not Be Allowed In School

Do you want kids to post pictures of teachers online? Do you want kids to text their mom to come get them? Do you want kids to take their phones to the bathroom? The answer is no. Phones should not be allowed in 10th period because of social media, taking advantage of using it anywhere , and texting.

Most schools do not allow the use of cell phones in school or in class, so the school feels like changing their policy of cell phone use might be a bad idea. Students could take advantage or miss use the privilege of phones in class. There will always be students who act out in class, but the school must discipline those who do and reward those who do not.

Cell phones are distracting in school and disrupt learning. Students should always be giving their teacher their undivided attention. Cell phones in school create problems and they affect students’ grades. Although some may claim these reasons to be true, they are undeniably wrong. The proponents of cell phones should not be allowed in school argue, “We know for a fact that the use of cell phones on school property around the country has led to a number of problems around safety.” This is wrong because cell phone use on school grounds is only beneficial to individuals on and off school property. Cell phones do not necessarily prevent problems, but they do help in times of emergencies. They promote safety in situations such as school shootings or hostage situations. The proponents of cell phones should not be allowed in school also argue “Student’s whose minds wander during a lecture or discussion may find the temptation of texting instead of listening hard to resist.” While this is true, it is up to the student to pay attention. However, texting instead of listening is the same as doodling and not listening, or playing on a school issued laptop even after being told to put it away. Imagine a school in which cell phones were not allowed on campus. How would the children contact their parents in the case of an emergency? Perhaps more importantly, how would this affect a child's ability to learn, and their access to knowledge? In an ever changing world most schools have adapted to use technology to their advantage. Whether this be strict times when cell phones are allowed, or more generalized rules, the schools today are able to shape these new devices in their favor. This movement, however, is looked at by some to be a terrible decision, and a hazard to children's growth in the school environment. Many teachers and adults don’t think cellphones should not be allowed in school because of the distraction they cause. In one of the articles I read the author says “A couple ways cell phones may cause distractions is people can play games on the phone, watch videos, and make phone calls. Over 87% of people play games and watch videos during school hours.” “Other reasons people shouldn't be allowed to have cell phones in school is
