In the 1870s, after the civil war, somehow, America was still at war. Americans disagreed over the topic of letting former slaves become citizens and reuniting a divided North and south. This was called reconstruction. When Andrew Johnson was in office in 1865 , congress passed an amendment declaring all the slaves in America free. The 13th amendment was disputed by many and a lot of people were extremely angry about it. The American government had a plan in include african americans in society. After the civil was, a lot of the American lands were literally in ruins. Farms and plantations and were trampled and destroyed. Also, Southerners were in despair because their currency was now useless after the Southern government was demolished. …show more content…
The president of the United states has the power to erect executive orders. Grant could have easily sent out the troops he already had out in the South to kill off the KKK but he didn't. Grant had the hands of corruption in his office and it was all his fault they were there because he made the decision to put them in office. Those corrupted officers are what distracted him from the efforts of reconstruction. Now the American people had lost all confidence in President Grant and even the people who voted him in had turned their backs on …show more content…
The KKK Kind of forced Grant to focus on them rather than reconstruction. In Doc A, talking about the KKK, says, “He was stabbed five or six times and then hanged on a hook in the grand jury room….”(Tourgee 511). This quote written by Albion Tourgee was recalling the death of A state senator from Casswell John W. Stephens. When the quote calls the killers “these fiends” He means the KKK. The KKK again, as a terrorist group was devoted to getting rid of reconstruction and they targeted anyone who supported reconstruction. This frightened Northern politicians and officers and turned the head of the government including President grant. Even though the North had troops in the south who could have abolished the entire organization of the KKK, they didn’t. Though the KKK distracted Grant From Reconstruction, he could have sent troops to kill them and refocused of reconstruction but sadly, he chose not
The reconstruction was an era when African Americans tried to fit in and to rebuild the South. The reconstruction started in 1876. Some troops started to leave the South. The KKK was also starting to rebel against the government. The North took their focus of reconstruction and focused on scandals. This essay is trustworthy because I used primary sources. The South was the cause for the end of the reconstruction because the KKK was killing people, KKK was forcing people to vote democratic ticket, and South did nothing about the KKK.
The American Civil War ended in 1865 which resulted in victory for the Union and the disbanding of the Confederacy. The aftermath of the war ushered in major political and social reforms in attempt to prevent the Civil War from happening ever again. The Reconstruction Era (1865-1877) began immediately after the war, then it was followed by the Gilded Age (1877 –1897), and at the turn of the century was the Progressive Era (1897–1920). These three significant time periods in American history introduced major changes to civil rights, industrialization, and foreign policy during the forty-five years following the Civil War. However, change was not always good. Some sought to take advantage of the shifting of tides and benefit from
The Reconstruction era was necessary for rebuilding the south. It was a success in some aspects and failure in others. The main purpose of the reconstruction was almost fulfilled, but it didn't stay after the reconstruction. Its aftermath was terrible in some aspects especially for african americans.
In Redemption: The Last Battle of the Civil War, Nicholas Lemann describes how reconstruction failed because of the violent strategies and intimidation of white southerners to African Americans, which took place mainly in Southern states like Mississippi and Louisiana. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves in the south in 1863. Later on, the thirteenth amendment was ratified to abolish slavery in 1865. Even though these documents were completed, African Americans were still fighting for their rights and went through hardships to keep their rights with the help of a few leaders. White Southerners believed that racial hierarchy was the natural order and that’s the only order they will go by.
The Reconstruction period after the Civil War was not effective. Numerous conflicts between President Johnson and Congress led to an inability to make decisions in government. Although laws were introduced by Congress to prevent slavery, Black Codes were created in the South which heavily restricted the rights of African Americans. Angry Southerners also created rebel groups in order to retaliate against the Radical Republicans. The Reconstruction was not effective as indecisiveness in government, the creation of Black Codes, and the introduction of rebel groups caused many of the problems prior to Civil War to be left unsolved.
What was the Reconstruction era? The Reconstruction era happened twelve years after the Civil War. This era was an attempt to increase freedom for the slaves, however, there was great resistance to this movement. Finally, after many attempts to reconstruct the South, the movement ended; leaving only whites-only in the government. Now the question stands, who killed the Reconstruction? The South had many attempts to reconstruct itself but many people resisted the movement. While the North just kinda let it happen.
Reconstruction has been brutally murdered! For a little over a decade after the Civil War, the victorious North launched a campaign of social, economic, and political recovery in the former Confederacy and to readmit the land in the former Confederacy back into the United States as states. Reconstruction yielded many benefits for African Americans. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments freed African Americans, made them citizens, and gave them the right to vote respectively. The Freedmen’s Bureau also provided African Americans and poor whites with education, jobs, and supplies. Despite this, Reconstruction was cut short in 1877. The North killed Reconstruction because of racism, negligence, and distractions.
An attempt to transform the Southern United states between the sad years of 1863 to 1877 to finally unite a kingdom that failed to racism and inequality was the idea of reconstruction. First, the three different perceptions of the Civil war came alive during reconstruction. The reconciliationist vision, the white supremacist vision, and the emancipationist vision. Then president lincoln was inclined to fix it all and invite the south back into the union, while congress tried to make African Americans feel like more than ⅔ of a person make their rights feel like an advantage to life instead of them being commandments that they have to carry and strictly follow. Lastly reconstruction led to the end of republican rule at different times in different places.
Have you ever thought about the Reconstruction period, maybe all of the negatives or positives from it? Reconstruction had different periods such as Emancipation and Reconstruction, Presidential Reconstruction, Radical Reconstruction, and the Compromise of 1877. The era after the Civil War, 1865 – 1877 was called the Reconstruction period. “The Union victory in the Civil War in 1865 may have given some 4 million slaves their freedom, but the process of rebuilding the South during the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) introduced a new set of significant challenges”(History.com Staff). Though human equality was the main goal of the Reconstruction period in the South after the Civil War, it proved to be an attempted compromise that actually created more conflicts.
The formal Congressional period of Reconstruction, from 1866 to 1877, was intended to readmit the former Rebel states into the Union, rebuild and reinvigorate communities ravaged by war, and eliminate the highly visible vestiges of Southern slave society. The events transpiring during these efforts made the whole affair largely ineffectual and reductive (“Reconstruction and Its Aftermath). In response, the South provided a marked resistance to the attempted establishment of civil rights and liberties for recently freed slaves, producing such scourges as the Ku Klux Klan, Grandfather Clause, and Jim Crow Laws. Beyond enforcing the rudimentary legislation that would grant basic agency to African Americans, Grant failed to institute long term and helpful efforts that would diminish the culture of racialized violence and white supremacy in the South. The Ku Klux Klan still exerted widescale political and local influence
During the time of Reconstruction, the federal government did little to help the people of America as a whole, they concentrated on bettering African American lives and “reconstructing” the South. The focus during this time period was to protect the rights of African Americans, which had long and hard been fought for. The federal government made it their priority to ensure equal rights among all black people. Also, the readmission of the Confederate states was essential to the federal
The Reconstruction Era happened on 1865-1877. At the point when Lincoln got killed and Andrew Johnson progressed toward becoming president. The Civil Rights Bill was instituted and Andrew Johnson vetoes the bill and Congress abrogate his veto authorizing blacks break even with rights. The Ku Klux Klan was built up in Tennessee. The fourteenth amendment was proposed by Congress furnishing blacks with citizenship and equivalent rights. The Reconstruction Acts Congress isolates previous Confederacy into five military areas and requires races in which African American men can vote. The fourteenth Amendment was verified and endorsed. South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Louisiana each endorsed the fourteenth Amendment
The process of Reconstruction ending was aggravated by the mishap of President Andrew Johnson but formally took place during the presidential election between (Democrat) Sam Tilden, and (Republican) Ruth B. Haynes. When Johnson filled in as president for late former President Abraham Lincoln, he deceived all the southerners by making them think that he had intentions of carrying out the same plans to “achieve restoration quickly”, as Abraham had originally yearned to do. Instead, Johnson passed black codes in which were “intended to reduce African Americans as close to slavery as possible.” Not only did southerners attest the ideals and motives of Johnson, but Congress as well did not agree with his ideas either. Once Congress passed the
After the North wins the Civil War the South was in ruins. Train tracks are demolished therefore preventing supplies to be sent to the people living in the South, and hundreds of buildings have collapsed. Thousands are dead or injured. Everyone knows what is coming next. Reconstruction has just begun, but how long will it last? The Civil War ended in the year 1865 and because the North won the war slavery was abolished. Amendments thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen have been ratified. Amendment thirteen ended slavery. Amendment fourteen gave African Americans, American citizenship and civil rights. The fifteenth amendment made it “illegal to deny someone the right to vote based on race.” (The DBQ Project 505). Reconstruction started in 1866 through 1909. A terrorist group called the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is a white supremacist group that was against Reconstruction and freedom and civil rights for the African Americans. Information for this essay was used from the newspapers Harper's Weekly, Independent Monitor, and the Boston Evening Transcript. Through thinking the African Americans should not be in the government, paying more attention to the government frauds than reconstruction, and the public opinion turning against reconstruction, the North is responsible for killing reconstruction.
The era of the Civil War lasted many years, but the United States government was ready for a massive change as soon as the war was finally over. Following the war, the era of Reconstruction had started, which lasted through four different presidencies. The presidents who served during that era were Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, and Rutherford B. Hayes. Each president had their own unique approach and understanding of what changes were needed during the Reconstruction, all with the intent to fully unify and reunite the nation. There were many successful examples under each president, along with many failures as well, however, the intent was the same throughout the years. The Reconstruction eventually led to the compromise with the states that had separated from the union, in which they finally joined back, however, more issues were to surface years later, in which the fight for civil rights developed and swept the nation by dividing the nation once more. After the Civil war, when the ideologies of the Reconstruction were put into place, there were still many issues about discrimination and hate towards the African-American communities. They were harassed, rejected, assaulted, exiled, and murdered due to the color of their skin. They were still treated like property, rather than human beings even though they had paperwork stating they were free from slave status, along with being given citizenship and granted suffrage. The movement that would continue
