Mandating is it right? Recently, at my place of employment a new policy of mandating is in place due to excessive call offs. This is a troubling issue for all of our staff, especially the ones who will be forced to stay almost against their will. It is not uncommon for my facility to get 1-4 call offs each shift per day. This has placed concern and fear into employees about having to stay over. The idea of not being able to plan anything the next day because you run the risk of possibly having to work over is no way to live. I try to understand everything in life from both sides and I see the reasoning of this implication but there has to be a better way. Most of our staff are either students, wives, or mothers and we all have lives …show more content…
Call- offs, whatever the reason, are considered during yearly evaluations. I had to leave work one day this year due to an allergy attack that left me with blurry vision as I couldn’t stop crying. My regular medication was not helping. That counted as a call-in and is one strike against me during my next evaluation. If you call in on one of your weekend shifts (we work every other weekend), you are automatically put on schedule for the following weekend. No exceptions as you are expected to make up that shift. I know people who have come in a “little under the weather” in order to avoid the make-up policy. I’m sure there are other hospital policies that I’m not aware of in order to deter nurses from calling in even when truly sick. I think my employer needs to tackle to problem from the bottom and discipline those who call off. Why punish those who have paid their dues. Employers should familiarize themselves with the laws regarding overtime and meal and rest periods in the states in which they operate. It is recommended that employers consult with an attorney in developing and implementing a policy on mandatory overtime, as they should with any new
Overtime a body of law or legislation has developed governing employer/employee relations and right of employees and employers in the workplace subsequently amended by the employment relations Acts of 1999 and 2003, provides arrange of contractual rights for employees including entitlement to an itemised pay statement.
Various factors have negatively influenced the nursing field. Those factors involve, but not limited to staff shortage, staffing ratios, mandatory overtime, violence issues, etc. In 2011, 16 states established limitations on the practice of mandatory overtime operated by nurses (ANA, 2011). Forced overtime laws monitor either nurse mandatory overtime or cumulative work hours. As prevention for nurses working mandatory overtime, state law permits employees to decline the offer of overtime by healthcare organizations, except during a medical emergency, which requires increased need for medical personnel unexpectedly. The overall goal of achieving mandatory overtime regulations is to produce supported practicing circumstances for nurses, as well as improve the quality of care for the patients.
Reasons for mandatory overtime varies from natural disaster to lack of staff. Many companies, organizations, and hospitals require mandatory overtime because of staffing issues. “Increasingly, however, nurses are reporting that mandatory overtime has become standard operating procedure instead of a last resort to short staffing. In fact, in some hospitals, mandatory overtime is routinely used in an effort to keep fewer people on the payroll, as well as to alleviate immediate shortage needs.” (Huston,

Reflecting on this course over this semester, there have been many lessons learned that will be valuable, as we enter the business world. Our first lesson was to learn to work together, as a team, to prepare a short memo, long memo, letter, and email for use in the business world. This is a lesson that will experience many times as we do our daily work. Punctuation and grammar are so important to present to the client and other organizations that we are professionals. It could mean the loss of a sale or acquiring new business. It’s like dressing for work; looking professional or unprofessional.
I am very fortunate to be serving as a Registered Nurse (RN) in our community for the past 17 years. For years, my RN colleagues here in Michigan have expressed frustration and concern when working chronically understaffed shifts and the when using mandated overtime to cover staffing shortages. Safe staffing levels
Employees have already testified that they were not expecting to work long hours that were assigned by their supervisors. Whatever the schedule decision may be, HR as well as supervisors can further define the work schedule to new-hires (or if the scheduling option which I recommended is used, HR will have the chance to help define work schedules as employees choose work shifts). Supervisors can also make sure that employees in general are up to date on any updates or upgrades to the Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) which employees need on the job.
Part of the contract of employment also states the amount of hours which are required by the employee per week. These hours must be met, and are put forward by the employer on a weekly rota. However, the employee is also entitled to holidays and bank holidays off work, once they have worked a certain amount of time,
If one does not work he/she will not get paid. An hourly employee is based on an hourly amount. Most employees are required to work a 40 hour work week. They do not have any contracts to sign to gain employment, however, have to fill out all the necessary paperwork for the onboarding. An hourly employee has to clock in upon arrival at work and upon leaving work. This helps keep track of hours worked and also get paid overtime, if the employee works more than 40 hrs a week. Benefits for hourly include: overtime pay if working over 40 hours a week, sick pay, holiday pay, vacations, bereavement leave, insurance, 401K, retirement, tuition reimbursement, bonuses, extended time off, but with no pay and employee purchase programs. If an hourly person needs to take an extended time off due to illness or family one will not get paid regular hourly pay like a salary employee would. The benefit of an hourly employee is that one can make the same amount of money or even more than a salaried employee because of all the overtime
“It is common for the hospital to post schedules with holes in them, meaning that not all the shifts are covered and they are short on nurses from the start. The crisis is predictable and inevitable. These crises are not foreseen or emergency situations, but rather ones that are planned, systemic and programmed for failure. They are not due to “call –ins” that the hospitals like to cite. Even so, there is absolutely no leeway for the event when a nurse does all in sick” (Twarog, 2011, p. 10).
In my opinion, I think Openness and Responsibility can help me be successful in ENG107 class. First, openness is very important. If I don't open my mind to learn new things, I can't even get new information from instructor. Second, Responsibility help me to get good grade. I need to turn in all assignment on time and reading book for a pop quiz.
Looking at the economy can be very black and white at times, some could even say it’s clear cut. Yet the reasons for fluctuation within markets, can significantly be impacted by the littlest of factors. One day an industry such as oil extraction can be booming and by the next facing a crippling public relations nightmare all from one mistake or oversite. That’s just how it works in the realm of big business. What if one was to say that company’s public relations nightmare would bring years of hurt, on everything from the regional economy, to the very life inhabiting in the affected area. What is there for us to do? How can we prevent such devastation brought on by mistakes?
I am undoubtedly certain i am being denied essential freedoms of human life and wrongfully confined I should not have been taken to the . On one cold November evening when i was casually strolling through quiet neighborhoods which i have been doing for quite sometime now. I was stopped by a police car which then asked me what i was doing then i responded with just simply walking for air. Not long after that i was detained and brought here to the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies (PCCRT) only for walking. There are many reasons on why I should be released because staying inside can be very bad for your health along with too much isolation and freedom of movement is crucial.
