After reading " CLUES to Critical Thinking" in chapter 5, I disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to allow Law enforcements to strip search an arrested individual who had only committed a minor offense. The Fourth Amendment clearly states that, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated. Unreasonable can be defined as not guided by or based on good sense, which in this case, strip searching an individual for a minor offense can be seen as unreasonable. The only time a cop should be able to strip search you is when the officer has a reasonable suspicion that you are either carrying contraband or an illegal weapon, that is what strip searches are for. It is not
Chapter 4 was about Critical Thinking. First, it goes over the six stages of listening which are hearing, understanding, remembering, interpreting, evaluating, and responding. Then the book talks about how cultural differences affect listening. Then, the benefits of critical listening such as reduced stress, more learning, improved speaker-audience relationships, improved decision making, improved speaking, and a better society. The four types of listening are introduced which are listening for pleasure, to provide emotional support, to get information, and to make an evaluation. The chapter ends with ways to improve your listening behaviors.
A. This chapter deals with the concept of how our countries private industrial interests are making money off creating fear in the public. He talks about how the media creates fear using national and international issues to create fear in us. He also talks about how our Government is a part of the media’s strategy to create fear in society. Also, that the church plays into it by responding to what is seen and reported in the news as a response to the times. - 82 words
Beliefs, attitudes and values are three little words that have and make a massive impact on who we are as individuals, who we are as people, and even how the world is viewed by ourselves and others. A belief is something that individuals or groups think, such as believing in a god. Where a Value would be the living life in the ways a religion expects, this value will be made from the belief that the person or group has in their God. The attitude towards this would be the feelings, beliefs and behaviour tendencies towards this, for example praying, reading the holy book,
The Purpose of this paper is to apply the 10 steps developed by (Browne & Keeley, 2010) and I will apply those methods on the following memo. A memo was drafted by Ms. Mary Ford (personal communication, January 30, 2012) who is Director of Amalgamated Public Employees Union (APEU) Local No. 121 to Mr. Hector Fuentes the President of APEU Local No. 121 on the issue on New Mexico State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Outsourcing, proposed by the New Mexico Governor Gloria Gainor. This is response memo to the Governor’s (personal communication, October 20, 2011) letter informing the APEU Local No. 121 the intent to
This article gives all individuals an insight on how the justice system and finding yourself on the wrong side of the law can land you in serious trouble. From start to finish we learn how an everyday working class person with no criminal history was affected by one police officer. We learn that sometimes it is better to play it safe than to try your luck with the legal system. Mrs. Hall in this article went from never committing a crime and to being charge with a misdemeanor charge, spending time in jail, losing multiple jobs, racking up numerous fees and putting her family in debt. It shows that even the routine of probations can turn into a nightware situation all dependant on the judge, who in this case seemed to be out to set an example
In the book “Asking the Right Questions, A Guide to Critical Thinking” M. Neil Browne and Stuart M. Kelley discuss the ten steps to critical thinking. In the following pages I will apply these steps to a memo that was sent to Mr. Robert Shaw of Triad Insurance Company of Indianapolis and discuss them in detail. The memo was from Ms. Denise Khali, Vice President of Human Resources. D. Khali, personal communication, October 04, 2010.
Dixie: Amanda, I agree with you that in making personal decisions that I use critical thinking most of the time. It take me time to decide what I want and how the outcome will be. I find that if I don’t use critical thinking the outcome could be way different. Does it take you a long time to make a decision?
One of the specific feature of critical thinking that I would like to talk about is keep an open mind. I seem to have a big problem with this one myself. I never keep an open mind when it comes to thinking because over the years I felt that my way or decision making would be the right one without the input of others. I have learned the hard way that listening to others turned out to be a good thing because their insight on things would make others make a better decision for themselves or even myself. Open-mindedness is characterized by being receptive to other views and having the willingness to change views with new facts and evidence. Open-mindedness increases intellectual capabilities by allowing for new experiences and perspectives. A narrow
Joan is 47 year od lady who complains of constant fatigue. Client states that she sleeps an average 6 hours a night but still feels exhausted. The constant feeling of exhaustion impedes her ability to seek employment. Joan is unemployed and is desperate to find work as she perceives herself as the main care giver in the family. However, issues such as conformity and disagreement, external validity, and assumptions of single explanations are likely to come between us and our personal desires and thoughts. These issues no matter what their determining the way we see the world and more so, are likely to decide what and whom we support. These issues, however, are either inborn or learned through the process of socialization and therefore are of significance to both the environment and our ways of operation. Therefore, there is need to award much importance to critical thinking and to stand by our decisions rather than the conformities of the rest who fall under our encryptions or
Developing critical thinking and communication skills can be learned by doing many activities. Some not as fun as others, such as a research paper. In my History class at the beginning of the year, our professor broke the bad news of writing a research paper that would be due near the end of the semester. That small anxiety attack hits you, but quickly vanishes after you realize you have plenty of time. Then the time comes closer and the professor begins to urge you to begin selecting a topic for your paper. What I have learned when selecting a research topic is to choose something that is interesting to you or something you are passionate about. I used this when choosing my topic. Like most research papers or scholarly papers, you are required
I think you are right about critical thinking, when you apply critical thinking it change the outcome of things. When we employ critical thinking we learn to see things in a different perspective and it encourages us to think outside of the box. Being able to think critically tells media organizations that we are not mindless sheep who blindly conform to their will. Much like John Fiske’s theory of audience power, Bell Hooks was trying to inform her student to embrace the media organization but don’t be a sheep. In other words, come up with your own meaning from what you observe so that you can make the best judgment about the issues that are unique to own life (Ryle, 2015, p.424). I always tell my eight-year-old stepson to think for himself
“Metacognition means thinking about thinking and can be applied in two general ways. It can mean thinking about the way that you learn best.” (Capella University, 2017) The other meaning of metacognition is the process of monitoring progress in thinking and learning in order to improve that way that you think. Monitoring how you learn and which strategies work the best for you, makes you the manager of your own learning. By doing this, it will help you be more successful whether it is with your school work, work at your job, and/or anything else that requires thinking.
Critical thinking is a process by which a thinker can improve the quality of their thinking through a process. It involves a series of process, that actively and skillfully conceptualizing, evaluating, applying, and analyzing information to reach an answer or a conclusion. This allows the reader to process the information received to come to a reasonable conclusion based on a reasoned process. This process involve the utilization of the ten step methodology presented in Browne and Keeley’s book called “Asking the Right Questions”. These steps are used to achieve a clearer understanding of the issues being evaluated.
