Course Description This course introduces students to the foundations of communication in a business setting. Students will develop skills in critical thinking and decision making through the forms of written communication, including memos, emails, business letters, and reports. Other topics include communication ethics and cross-cultural communications, personal communication styles, solving organizational problems, and the evaluation of an organizations strategic direction. We will return to class on January 8, 2013. Homework turned in later than December 24, 2012 for the first week will be counted as late. Homework turned in January 8 will count as one day late and so on.

Week Two: Critical Thinking Applied to Effective Communication
Details
Objectives Readings Readings Participation Learning Team Instructions 2.1 Analyze the validity, credibility, and reliability of data. 2.2 Evaluate arguments for validity. Read Ch. 4, 5, 6, & 7 of Critical Thinking. Review this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings. Discussion Question answers and participation in class discussion. Select a topic to be used for a debate. The topic should be controversial and phrased as a “Yes” or “No” question. Examples include “Should guns be outlawed?” or “Should the United States leave Afghanistan?” Submit the topic to the facilitator through one team member’s individual forum for approval in Week Two. Read the Debate Paper assignment requirements located in Week Five. Xcom285 has taught me many valuable assets that I can use in my future, but I believe that the most valuable thing that I have learned is that communications is not just talking. Communications is about listening and writing as well. It is important in business communications to understand that to effectively communicate one need’s to tune into everything that is going on around him or her. This means that he or she needs to understand the audience, the purpose of, and the most effective way to deliver or receive the message. This course covers the fundamentals and best practices of using written communication in business and in the information technologies. Topics include strategies, techniques, and nuances for producing e-mails, memos, reports, proposals, project specifications, and user manuals, as well as other technical documents.
The writing skills and techniques learned in my Essentials of Managerial Communication class can and will benefit me in my future classes as well as in my career in many ways. A few of the skills learned are including, but not limited to the appropriate ways of communicating depending on the audience, e-mail and business letter writing etiquette and also the importance of unbiased speaking in the workplace. The primary reason for taking Business Communication is that the course is a requirement for me to obtain my degree. However, I am also taking this course to learn how to write in a clear and professional style. I believe that by taking this course I will gain the skills necessary to communicate with my peers as well as share ideas clearly.
Communication can be defined as an imparting or exchanging of information; however, the topic reading for this week refers to communication as a way of thinking. To fully grasp this concept, communication must first be broken down into two major types: expressive and receptive. Expressive communication involves writing and speaking. In the accounting field, and sometimes if life, these forms are considered to have higher importance than others such as listening and reading. Accountants use expressive communication often, including when writing reports, office memos, and letters to clients. How to write an official letter or invitation to take a partner and negotiate with them, resolve issues and develop mutually beneficial cooperation? All of these issues in many countries pay very much attention. Of particular importance is business communication for people involved in business. To a large extent on how they know the science and art of communication, the success of their activities. In the West there are relevant courses in almost every university and college, published many scientific and popular literature.
Finding a specific career path can not only be difficult, but it can also induce bouts of anxiety, anger, and sadness over a crucial part of an individual’s life. Settling on a career can be unnerving when thinking about the fact that this is the career that you spend thousands of dollars on in college, that this is the career you will work in until you retire. With this course, I’ve found that it has been easier to narrow down a goal towards finding a career. Through career assessments, different assignments and discussions, I have realized what my barriers and strengths are. Overcoming these and improving these skills or applying them to an actual career assisted me in narrowing my goal as well. I am now able to clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of my career goal and to think clearer about the next steps that I will take after this course.
