Malala Yousafzai is the youngest person to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. In the book I am Malala the theme of oppression is recurring. The Taliban has oppressed Malala’s village, and I had felt that even though they were oppressed they stood up for what they believed in, even if it meant they’re life was in danger. The first theme that I thought best represented this book was family/friendship. Even though Malala went through this oppression she came through even a stronger activist for women’s education. While she was advocating for girl’s education her family still had her back and even encouraged her to fight for girl’s right to education. The second theme I picked was survival/healing. The few concrete houses had been built by families whose sons or fathers had gone south…” which made me feel like her village was a small cozy, beautiful place, but after the Taliban invaded it, its beauty had been destroyed. The theme of family/friendship is very present in Malala’s biography. Her family always have her back and support her for her fight against the Taliban's oppression and governments incompetence. Her father especially encouraged her to fight for what she believed in. Malala and her father have a special bond the way she puts it is “All children are special to their parents, but to my father I was his universe.” ( Yousafzai 246). This quote really shows how close Malala and her father were to each other. Even with the Taliban’s increasing oppression Malala’s family is there for her and supported her through it all. Malala’s village and friends are basically all family. Even when she was shot her village and friends were praying for her. She says “People prayed to God to spare me,and I was spared for a reason- to use my life to helping people..” ( Yousafzai 301). This quote really shows how much her village really cares about her and her family. While Malala was at the hospital she read Alice in Wonderland, and what she wrote about how she interpreted it was really interesting.
