Of the many things that can be compared between Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution, one of the most significant similarities is characters. One of the many allegories is Old Major and Vladimir Lenin. Vladimir Lenin was born on April 10th, 1870. He was born into a wealthy family and early in his life, his brother was executed for trying to kill Czar Alexander the 3rd in a bombing plot. This event eventually led him to becoming a Marxist. These situations are very similar being that both figures had attempted shots fired at them while or shortly after giving a message to their people. The last resemblance between Old Major and Lenin is that they both had either part or all of their body preserved after death. In Animal Farm, Old Major’s skull was put on display and the animals on the farm had to pass by it daily. “The skull of old Major, now clean of flesh, had been disinterred from the orchard and set up on a stump at the foot of the flagstaff, beside the gun. After the hoisting of the flag, the animals were required to file past the skull in a reverent manner before entering the barn” (Orwell Another parallel between Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution is Napolean to Joseph Stalin. Joseph Stalin was born on December 21, 1879. He was born Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili, however when he was in his 30s he took the name Stalin, meaning “man of steel”. He grew up as an only child and was poor, living with an alcoholic father who beat him, and a mom who was a laundress. Later in his teen years, he earned a scholarship to attend seminary. Joseph Stalin, the leader of Russia during the Russian revolution, and Napoleon, head of the Animal Farm, have a more association than any other character in Animal Farm or historical political figure. Napoleon and Stalin share character traits like intelligence, leadership, and devotion. Napoleon had many followers on the Animal Farm just as Stalin had devoted followers that admired him. Napoleon and Stalin, however, did not make everyone happy. The enemy that Stalin had to deal during the Revolution was Leon Trotsky. Trotsky disapproved of what Stalin was doing with Russia and it's citizens. In Animal Farm, Napoleon had to deal with Snowball. Joseph Stalin was a big supporter of communism and Napoleon had similar beliefs but the government was called Animalism. With many similarities, these two figures were not the exact same but the author, George Orwell, created Napoleon in Stalin's image.
N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Sept. 2016. Old Major is the animal version of V. I. Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Party that seized control in the 1917 Revolution. As old Major outlines the principles of Animalism, a theory holding that all animals are equal and must revolt against their oppressors, Lenin was inspired by Karl Marx's theory of Communism, which urges the "workers of the world" to unite against their economic oppressors. As Animalism imagines a world where all animals share in the prosperity of the farm, Communism argues that a "communal" way of life will allow all people to live lives of economic equality. old Major dies before he can see the final results of the revolution, as Lenin did before witnessing the ways in which his disciples carried on the work of
They ruled with an iron fist and also had goals to eliminate anyone who was against their ideas. Even thought they had similar intentions, the way they reached their goals were different. Lenin rose to power after Russian society overthrew the czar, allowing him to take control of a democratic republic, while Stalin rose to power after Russian society had already been under a dictatorship for some time now. Also, while Lenin was more focused on socialist ideals to have complete economic control on land and business, Stalin mainly focused on his communist ideology to maintain his power violently, causing Stalin to fall out of his power and leadership quicker than Lenin. Adding on the reasons they had such ways of doing things could have been connected to how their childhood shaped their ideals, personalities and attitude, it was also the surroundings they grew up in that led them to where they
