(a) The acidic character of the given substances is due to the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group which is attached to a carbonyl group. In the acrylic acid (CH2=CHCOOH), the hydroxyl group is attached to a carbonyl group which is further bonded with an sp2 hybridized carbon whereas, in the case of propanoic acid, the carbonyl group is bonded with an sp3 hybridized carbon. The sp2 hybridized carbon makes the acrylic acid stronger acid as it makes the carbonyl carbon more electrophilic.
