Concept Introduction:
The acid is involved in the release of a proton whereas a base is involved in acceptance of an
Conjugate base: The substance that is left over after an acid donates a proton in a
Bronsted–Lowry acid transfer a proton and form base as the other compound can accept a proton. This is called conjugate acid-base pair. In pair of conjugate acid and base, the acid form is protonated and the base form lost the proton. Every acid has a conjugate base. They are related by loss or gain of proton.
The expression for conjugate base and acid is as follows:

HClarrow_forwardAluminum chloride, AlCl3, reacts with trimethyl-amine, N(CH3)3. What would you guess to be the product of this reaction? Explain why you think so. Describe the reaction in terms of one of the acid base concepts. Write an appropriate equation to go with this description. Which substance is the acid according to this acidbase concept? Explain.arrow_forwardWrite the acid ionization constant expression for the ionization of each of the following monoprotic acids. a. HF (hydrofluoric acid) b. HC2H3O2 (acetic acid)arrow_forward
- What is the freezing point of vinegar, which is an aqueous solution of 5.00% acetic acid, HC2H3O2, by mass (d=1.006g/cm3)?arrow_forwardPure liquid ammonia ionizes in a manner similar to that of water. (a) Write the equilibrium for the autoionization of liquid ammonia. (b) Identify the conjugate acid form and the base form of the solvent. (c) Is NaNH2 an acid or a base in this solvent? (d) Is ammonium bromide an acid or a base in this solvent?arrow_forwardEthanol (ethyl alcohol), CH3CH2OH, can act as a BrnstedLowry acid. Write the chemical equation for the reaction of ethanol as an acid with hydroxide ion, OH. Ethanol can also react as a BrnstedLowry base. Write the chemical equation for the reaction of ethanol as a base with hydronium ion, H3O+. Explain how you arrived at these chemical equations. Both of these reactions can also be considered Lewis acid base reactions. Explain this.arrow_forward
