Chapter 24, Problem 1DA
Summary Introduction

To determine: The genome comparison between the per mega-base pair of genomic DNA in humans and rice.

Introduction: The genes are the sequence of nucleotides that are present on the chromosomes and encode for a specific protein that plays a crucial role in the functioning of the different processes in an organism. The gene is located at specific gene loci and can be structural or regulatory in nature.

Explanation of Solution

Thesize of the human genome is 3384 megabase pairs, whereas the genome size of rice, Oryza sativa is 373 to 400 megabase pairs. The number of human genes is around 35000 whereas the genome ofricecontains about 45000 to 56000 genes.

The ratio between the genome size of rice and humans will be about 10:1. The number of functional genes in rice is more than in human even though the genome size is ten times smaller than humans. The genomes in figure 24.1 that are most like humans in terms of the ratio of genes to base pairs are mouse and chimpanzee that are Mus musculus and Pan troglodytes, respectively.

What are some general conclusions from human genomic studies regarding the number of genes present and the relative proportion of the genome that performs genic functions?
The Japanese canopy plant (Paris japonica) has one of the largest of all eukaryotic genomes, with approximately 150 billion base pairs, about 50 times the size of the human genome. In contrast, the bladderwort Utricularia gibba has one of the smallest plant genomes, with only 82 million base pairs. What predictions can you make about the genomes of these two species?
