Students Lucia. Isabel, and Austin are investigating how snow stops a dropped 500-g lemon juice bottle. In particular, they are interested in how the force exerted by the snow depends on the age of the snow. They take high-speed videos of the bottle while it sinks into the snow, taking their first set of measurements 4 days after fresh snowfall and the second set of measurements 2 days later. After analyzing the videos frame by frame (see photo), they plot a graph that shows how the velocity of the bottle from the moment the bottle touches the snow changes for both types of snow (Figure P3.32
They each explain their results as follows:
Lucia The 6-day snow exerts a larger force on the bottle because it stops the bottle in a shorter time.
Isabel The time taken to stop the bottle does not say much about the force. The 6-day snow exerts a larger force on the bottle because the slope of its vv (t) graph is steeper.
Austin We cannot compare the forces exerted by the snow because the initial velocities are different. We need to repeat the experiments and make sure we always drop the bottle from the same height
Explain how each student reached her/his conclusion and decide who (if anyone) is correct indicate any assumptions that you have made.

- Check Your Understanding Notice that the mass of the air in the tank was neglected in the analysis and solution. How would the solution method changed if the air was included? How large difference do you think if would make in the final answer?arrow_forwardA model rocket engine has an average thrust of 5.26 N. It has an initial mass of 25.5 g, which includes fuel mass of 12.7 g. The duration of its burn is 1.90 s. (a) What is the average exhaust speed of the engine? (b) This engine is placed in a rocket body of mass 53.5 g. What is the final velocity of the rocket if it were to be fired from rest in outer space by an astronaut on a spacewalk? Assume the fuel burns at a constant rate.arrow_forwardUsually, we do not walk or even stand on a lightweight boat or raft because of the danger of falling into the water. If you have ever stepped off a small boat onto a dock, however, you have probably noticed that the boat moves away from the dock as you step toward the dock or out of the boat. A heavy dog running on a long lightweight raft presents a similar situation. At first, the raft and the dog are at rest with respect to the water (Fig. P10.38A) so that vi=0. The dog then runs on top of the raft at vd=vd with respect to the water (Fig. P10.38B). The dog has twice the mass of the raft. Find an expression for the velocity of the raft after the dog began running. FIGURE P10.38arrow_forward

The hose is originally full of motionless water. What additional force is necessary to hold the nozzle stationary after the water flow is turned on if the discharge rate is 0.600 kg/s with a speed of 25.0 m/s? Figure P9.32arrow_forward
