Chapter 4, Problem 2CAE

A South San Francisco child enjoyed bath time at his home because of the colorful orange and red water. The water did not have this rusty color at its source, and the water department could not culture the Thiobacillus bacteria responsible for the rusty color from the source. How were the bacteria getting into the household water? What bacterial structures make this possible?

Why do petroleum-degrading bacteria need to attach to thesurface of oil droplets?
1) would you describe the contents of the soil-inoculated broth as being a “pure culture”? Why or why not? 2) How did the uninoculated broth differ in appearance from the broths inoculated with E. Coli and M. Luteus? And then how could you tell if a supposedly sterile, uninoculated broth was contaminated?  Please explain in detail and highlight the important parts cuz I am confused and need help! Thanks
I'm having trouble identifying the type of bacteria I have cultured. I know that it is gram-negative and cocci in shape, it grows wonderfully on the MSA plate but did not grow so well on the EMB plate, and it is non-motile. It has a yellow color but I'm just not sure what it is. It was obtained from a public area. Any ideas?
