Chapter 8, Problem 66P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:The reaction that illustrates ester hydrolysis should be identified

Concept introduction:Ester is a compound formed by condensation between one equivalent of alcohol and one equivalent of carboxylic acid. The process involves release of one water molecule. This is often catalyzed by sulfuric acid.

Ester hydrolysis is reverse of esterification and it is also known as saponification. It involves cleavage of ester linkage to give back the alcohol and carboxylic acid. This is catalyzed by sodium hydroxide.

When trichloroacetaldehyde is dissolved in water, almost all of it is converted to the hydrate. Chloral hydrate, the product of the reaction, is a sedative that can be lethal. A cocktail laced with it is known—in detective novels, at least—as a “Mickey Finn.” Explain why an aqueous solution of trichloroacetaldehyde is almost all hydrate.
Explain why pentane-2,4-dione forms two alkylation products (A and B) when the number ofequivalents of base is increased from one to two.
