Did you know that nineteen percent of schools reported to wearing uniforms in the 2009-2010 school year? Many students are opposed to uniforms. On the other hand, some teachers approve them. I think students should not have to wear uniforms. Uniforms do not let students express themselves, promote conformity over individuality, and do not improve attendance, academic preparedness, or test results. School uniforms do not allow students to express themselves through their clothes. They take away the freedom of expression (the first amendment). David L. Brunsma, PhD, professor of sociology at Virginia Tech co-authored research that studied 10th graders. He found "no effects of uniforms on absenteeism, behavioral problems, or substance use on campus." and "no effects" on "pro-school attitudes, academic preparedness, and peer attitudes towards school. Brunsma also found a "negative effect of uniforms on academic achievement," and later found the same for elementary students and eighth graders, all according to procon.org. In truth, this is my strongest belief on why we should not have uniforms. If it does not improve students grade, why have them? In conclusion, uniforms do not make students academically better. Although uniforms cause countless problems, there are some benefits to them. Uniforms discourage crime and increase student safety. Uniforms also keep students focused on their school work. They provide less drama and distraction, and more focus on education. Uniforms save valuable class time because they are easier to enforce than a regular dress code. Therefore, there are some pros to uniforms. In summary, schools should not have uniforms. They do not allow students to express themselves. Also, they teach conformity over individuality. In addition to being useless in schools, they do not improve attendance, academic preparedness, or test results. Really, they do not improve anything.
