Chapter B, Problem 6RP
Paper Strength. In their text, Introduction to Linear Regression Analysis, Second Edition (New York: Wiley. 1992), D. Montgomery and E. Peck investigate data on the tensile strength of Kraft paper and its relationship to concentration (percentage) of hardwood used in the batch of pulp to produce the paper. The data are presented in the following table.
The
- a. Would the method of transformations be useful in straightening this scatterplot? Explain your answer.
- b. Based on the scatterplot in Output B.89, what polynomial would you use to fit the data?
- c. We obtained the table on page B-168 that gives the value of the P-statistic and its P-value (shown parenthetically below the t-statistic) for each term in the polynomial regression equations from degree 1 to degree 7 using the centered predictor variable. Use the forward selection method to decide on the degree of the polynomial regression equation relating tensile strength to hardwood concentration.
- d. Use the table in part (c) and the backward elimination method to decide on the degree of the polynomial regression equation relating tensile strength to hardwood concentration.
- e. Do the forward selection and backward elimination methods yield the same results? If so, is that always the case?
- f. Outputs B.90(a), (b), and (c) on page B-168 show, respectively, plots of residuals versus fitted values, residuals versus the centered predictor variable (CC), and a normal probability plot of the residuals for the polynomial regression equation obtained by the forward selection method. Perform a residual analysis to assess the appropriateness of the regression equation, constancy of the conditional standard deviations, and normality of the conditional distributions. Check for outliers and influential observations.
- g. Does your analysis in part (f) reveal any violations of the assumptions for regression inferences? Explain your answer.
