As a leader, sometimes we control not only our destiny but also the destiny of our followers as well. Hence, our decision-making skills should be impeccable, compared to an average person. When one thinks about it that is a lot pressure on the leader to consistently make good decision. It is even harder when one has a follower who tends to challenge one’s decision on a regular basis, like first mate, Chase and second mate, Joy on the Essex. As a leader, one should always never disregard the opinion of one’s subordinates. But, it is up to the leader to defend his or her opinion when challenged by one of the follower. Defending one’s principle or idea is key because this will showcase everyone one’s knowledge and wisdom that the person possess. Knowledge and wisdom alone cannot ensure a person from win an argument. He or she need to have good communication skills and is needed to get one’s points across. Apart from that, a leader should have the brains and that patience that is needed to explain an idea to a group of follower where each person has different intellectual levels. This is why a good communication skill is needed. A leader should have the same key ability as every good teacher: ability to teach a group of followers with various learning curves. Another important ability that a leader needs to have is the ability to trust on his or her own gut feeling. Many would agree that more often than none, one’s gut feeling is right. Sometimes, it might be wrong but as long
Every person has a different definition of what makes a leader. Some feel a leader is inspirational, while others regard leadership as someone who can give criticism and make the tough decisions. Each definition is unique, and each is vague. This is why the definitions of leadership people use aren’t always accurate. Bolman and Deal, however, do an excellent job of presenting four frames of leadership people use to successfully—or unsuccessfully—support and lead a group of people. The four frames presented by the authors are: human resource, symbolic, structural, and political. The human resource frame is used by leaders to empathize with their followers, the symbolic frame is used to inspire and unite followers around a vision, the structural frame is used to emphasize the importance of a process, and the political frame establishes competition and focuses on creating allies.
What does it take to be an effective leader in today’s fast paced and ever changing world?
What does it mean to be a leader? We encounter leaders in everyday situations, whether it be a professor, boss, coach, or parent. No matter how distinguished or subordinate our roles, we have some type of leadership responsibility over others. How does one effectively lead other people? What methods, ideas, and skills should leaders convey to the public? It is not always easy or fun to be a leader and it is almost guaranteed that a population will not like the views and beliefs of the one in charge. What type of person or idea comes to mind when someone says the word President? Hopefully, they are positive words like leader, intelligent, helpful, and hardworking. A president has one of the toughest leadership roles because he/she is placed in a position to make very tough decisions on topics that people have many varying opinions about. As a voter, it can be difficult to stay informed on topics and determine which party to choose. A person must ask themselves what they stand for or believe in and then decide which candidate is best qualified to fulfill the requirements. Being a first time voter is a very exciting experience that comes with a great responsibility. The 2016 campaign has showcased much personal and political turmoil of the candidates, making it hard to know which side to choose. With an election year like never before, the candidates have placed a lot of pressure on voters to decide who is fit enough to bring our country back into order, but Donald Trump has
Along with having creative decisions, a leader has to have confidence in the decisions they make. They need to be able to decisively make a choice and then follow that choice with conviction. They should never be disinclined to make a decision. Also a leader has to have confidence in the actions of their group. He or she should trust that the jobs assigned will be handled in a timely manner. During stressful moments a leader remains placid so that others will stay calm.
What makes a leader a leader? Are leaders born or are they shaped by their experiences? Do we follow leaders because we believe in the same ideology or simply because they are charismatic? Many theories argue many ways a leader is made, yet it is truly not crystal clear what makes a leader a leader.
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader’s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a
What does it mean to be a leader? What qualities does a leader have? How do you become a good leader? Leader have many qualities that represent a wise person. There are leaders in everyday life and most of the time we don’t realize, their leaders. If we didn’t have leaders in life, nothing would get done and people would be clueless. Leader tend to lead when the time gets tough and people look to them. What happens if your leader is not a good leader? Your leader can also lead you into trouble and not be a traditional good leader. There are three leaders that come all in different times, Plato, Machiavelli, and Marcus Aurelius. These leaders aren’t at all from the same era, Plato was about 400 BC, Marcus about 200 common era, and Machiavelli about 1450 AD. These leaders all have different leading methods and show them through their writings. Of these three leaders I believe Marcus Aurelius is the better leader of the three. Marcus just like Machiavelli was an actually leader. Their ideas are is it better to be feared or love? Marcus thinks love, well Machiavelli thinks feared. The Plato side, is Platonism which is basically go with the flow type of leading, if you can’t control don’t worry about it. Unlike the first two Plato was never an actual leader. There are clearly different ways in which these leaders lead, they all have made clear texts for each style.
Someone who is considered a leader has to have many qualities and abilities. They must have
In the three surveys that I took about what makes a good leader, all three of the individuals agreed on relatively the same thing. Not one of the survey takers chose the answer neither agree nor disagree or worse. Each answer was agree or strongly agree to the fourteen questions. A leader has great characteristics and the ability to motivate others. In this paper, I will go over their results and talk about what makes a good leader.
The topic of leadership, more specifically effective leadership, has been a common research topic for quite some time. There are many definitions and many views on what makes a good leader. In Management, Kreitner defines leadership as “the process of inspiring, influencing, and guiding, others to participate in a common effort” (Kreitner, 394). This is a broad definition describing a leader that can inspire workers to achieve their goals. In regards to what actually makes a good leader,, the concepts and research have recently been geared towards ethics and the differences and common qualities between a leader and a manager. In essence, “today’s leaner and continuously evolving organizations require people who can both lead and manage—in
What makes a manager of an organization one that can be properly characterized as an authentic leader? Furthermore, what makes the people who report to that manager motivated to not only accomplish the needed tasks and meet the required deadlines, but also to go above and beyond that to simply do the right thing, or, for the benefit of others in the organization? I will demonstrate through this post that I believe the one characteristic that makes a very good leader a great (and truly effective) one is when they display authentic leadership. I will discuss two specific methods that characterized my manager’s display of authenticity in his leadership style as an accounting manager: ethics and trust, and other-centeredness (described by Robbins and Judge as, “socialized charismatic leadership”) (2011).
As John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” When people think of a leader they might think of the president of the United States or, for sports, a quarterback. Everyone knows that a leader has to know how to lead people to the goal, whether its being a successful businessman or winning the super bowl. However, people have different opinions on what qualities a leader has to have. Some people say a leader needs to be determined; others say leaders need to be honest. There are many people that are leaders in history and in our own lives. Leaders are not always a good person, there are also bad leaders. There are things that a leader can do that can
A leader can be a manager, but a manager is not necessarily a leader. The leader of the work group may emerge informally as the choice of the group. If a manager is able to influence people to achieve the goals of the organization, without using his or her formal authority to do so, then the manager is demonstrating leadership (Allen, 1998).
Defining leadership is complex and varied in nature. The complexity derives from a multiplicity of societal depictions of “what is leadership?” leadership is found in different levels of society thus giving different meaning and definition depending on the audience.
From the time we are born, we are guided by those around us. Without even knowing it, we begin our journey as followers being led by our parents and those closest to us. We look to our caregivers’ cues to develop us. We watch as they do things like eat, walk, and talk. By the completion of our first year through their guidance we have begun to master these skills as we have observed and been taught. But this is only the beginning for us, this pattern of leader and follower will never cease. Even for those that rise high up a corporate ladder with copious amounts of employees below them to lead, will draw leadership directions from a source they are inspired by.
