Diet of ducks bred for broiling. Corn is high in starch content; consequently, it is considered excellent feed for domestic chickens. Does corn possess the same potential in feeding ducks bred for broiling? This was the subject of research published in Animal Feed Science and Technology (April 201 0). The objective of the study was to establish a prediction model for the true metabolizable energy (TME) of corn regurgitated from ducks. The researchers considered 11 potential predictors of TME: dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), ash (ASH), crude fiber (CF). neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), gross energy (GE), amylose (AM), amylopectin (AP), and amylopectin/amylose (AMAP). Stepwise regression was used to find the best subset of predictors. The final stepwise model yielded the following results:
- a. Determine the number of 1-tests performed in step 1 of the stepwise regression.
- b. Determine the number of 1-tests performed in step 2 of the stepwise regression
- c. Give a full interpretation of the final stepwise model regression results.
- d. Explain why it is dangerous to use the final stepwise model as the "best" model for predicting TME.
- e. Using the independent variables selected by the stepwise routine, write a complete second-order model for TME.
- f. Refer to part e. How would you determine if the terms in the model that allow for curvature are statistically useful for predicting TME?

- In an observational study, it was noticed that people that eat more chocolate tend to have better blood flow than the general population. Researchers wonder whether the improved blood flow might be caused by flavanols (a molecule found in many foods). Dark chocolate contains a high concentration of flavanols, but milk chocolate contains a much lower concentration. How could the researchers design an experiment to determine the effects of flavanol on blood flow from the different types of chocolate?arrow_forwardIn a certain jurisdiction, all students in Grade Three are required to take a standardized test to evaluate their math comprehension skills. The file contains these data resulting from a random sample of n=30 schools within this jurisdiction. From these data you wish to estimate the model Yi=β0+β1Xi+ei where Xi is the percentage of Grade Three students in School i who live below the poverty line and Yi is the average mathematics comprehension score for all Grade Three students in the same school, School i. The observed data for the X variable is labled perbelowpoverty and the observed data for the Y variable is labeled mathscore in the file.Import (either hand type or load the file) data into R Studio, then answer the following questions based on the data.(a) Create a scatterplot of the data. What can you say about the nature of the relationship between the percentage of Grade Three students living below the poverty line in a certain school and the school's average Grade Three…arrow_forwardIt is hypothesized that there are fluctuations in norepinephrine (NE) levels which accompany fluctuations in affect with bipolar affective disorder (manic-depressive illness). Thus, during depressive states, NE levels drop; during manic states, NE levels increase. To test this relationship, researchers measured the level of NE by measuring the metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG in micro gram per 24 hour) in the patient's urine experiencing varying levels of mania/depression. Increased levels of MHPG are correlated with increased metabolism (thus higher levels) of central nervous system NE. Levels of mania/depression were also recorded on a scale with a low score indicating increased mania and a high score increased depression. The data is provided below. - A group of 10-year-old boys were first ascertained in a camp for diabetic boys. They had their weight measured at baseline and again when they returned to camp 1 year later. Each time, a serum sample was obtained from which a determination of hemoglobin A1c (HgbA1c) was made. HgbA1c (also called glycosylated hemoglobin) is routinely used to monitor compliance with taking insulin injections. Usually, the poorer the compliance, the higher the HgbA1c level will be. The hypothesis is that the level HgbA1c is related to weight. The data in Table 11.28 were obtained. 11.92 What test can be performed to assess the relationship between weight and HgbA1c at the initial visit? 11.93 Please perform the test in Problem 11.92, and report a two-tailed p-value. 11.94 Do the results in Problem 11.93 imply a relationship between change in HgbA1c and change in weight for an individual boy?
