Chapter 6, Problem 4Q
Summary Introduction
To review:
The products formed when iodoacetamide reacts with an enzyme containing cysteine residue.
Introduction:
Irreversible inhibitors are typical enzyme inhibitors, which have a tendency to form covalent associations with enzymes. This covalent association results in the inactivation of the enzyme, because one of the key catalytic residues of the enzyme becomes modified. A characteristic inhibitor of most of the cysteine-containing amino acids is iodoacetate.

The hexokinases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of hexoses (sugars with six carbons). The hexokinases will bind only D-hexose sugars and not their L-counterparts. In general terms, describe the features of enzyme structure that make this specificity possible.
A glycolytic intermediate may be used to make the glycerol 3-phosphate necessary for the production of glycerophospholipids. For this conversion, provide a reaction sequence.
If thymine nucleotides are degraded by the same enzymes as those
catabolizing uridine nucleotides, give the structure of the thymine
metabolite that corresponds to B-ureidopropionate.
